Hi there!

I'm trying to refresh a datasource connected to a local text file. Unfortunately I'm getting “Could not find file" error.

I’m sure that file exists and all necessary permissions are granted.

Gateway connection test proves that:

Would you mind advising me how can I resolve the issue?

Moving Data Model out of PowerBI

$

Hi All,

I have created a data model inside power bi for a large organization. Currently , it supports all data limits and works fine. For scalability purpose, I am thinking to move the data model out of power bi. Now I can create a SSAS package and move to AAS package and connect power bi from there but there is lot of rework required for data mashup using SSIS.

I am using SSDT with 1400 compatiblity and DataLake as my source. SSDT crashes at times and requires login information everytime when data refreshes. Anyone tried this process or is there a better way to work with ?

Thanks,

Varun Aggarwal

I've been using the same enterprise gateway for months, when suddenly I started getting a "data refresh disabled" error.  Now, I cannot even update my gateway credentials, as I am prompted to use a "Personal Gateway".

No idea what how to fix this, as I cannot "uncheck" the personal gateway option.

I'm getting about 20 emails a day telling me the data "has failed to refresh", and I was hoping it would self-fix in the same way it self-broke, but it's not fixing.

So, I need help. The emails are annoying, but worse my data is not refreshing unless I manually republish.

Can anyone please help?

This is driving me bananas.  Yesterday it was working fine.

I have the Gateway personal installed.

And I can see this in my power bi dataset

However when I click manage gateways, it says

It was showing the gateway yesterday just fine......any ideas?

Get Twitter Impressions and Total engagements

Hello,

Is there a way I can capture Impressions and total engagements of a tweet from Twitter? I don't see that option available in Flow and upon investigation I confirmed it is unavailable in the Twitter- Connectors. Currently, the only way I see that available is to manually export the analytics from Twitter. However, I've seen folks on Twitter regularly updating Power BI reports of tweets related to an event which contains impressions and engagements regularly so it seems they are automating it somehow.

So far I have been successfully at capturing information from twitter via Flow and saving it in my Azure SQL database, however, I'm still looking for adding the impressions and engagements.

I searched around for a while and did come across these two articles. They are close but not exactly what I am looking for.

  1. Stream Analytics and Power BI: A real-time analytics dashboard for streaming data
  2. Get started using Azure Stream Analytics: Real-time fraud detection

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Web data ( api or Google analytics) PLUS local excel refresh

Hi Community,

I have created a desptop .pbix file which has following data connectors:

 Google analytics

Excel file stored on the company server ( accessing the file via on-premises gateway )

My file works fine, but I can't refresh my files once uploaded to service.

Not only it stops me to schedulle a refresh but also stops to do a manual refresh.

The only solution working for now is to re-publish each time.

P.S.

a- If I remove the Google analytics data connector and keep just excel file, the excel file works fine via tha gateway and lets me perferm a schedule & refresh.

b- If I remove the excel file and keep just the google analyticd, again it works fine in all aspects on the published report in service.

As soon as I combine both in a report, the error I gets is gateway not defined.

2017-09-18 14 39 16.png

here is a snapshot of same file , when Google analytics connector is removed, the gateway starts wokring.2017-09-18 14 40 12.png

Note: the way around for now, I have created is to load the excel file on google docs and it is working.

Is there any requirement or limit on one file local with a web file in same report published can't be refreshed etc

any help, guidelines, material will be highly appriciated.

Thanks & Regards

How to see who has "Published to web"?

Dear Power BI community friends,

it's my first message (of many I expect) in this forum. We're currently accessing Power BI at our company and we're looking forward for the future.

Regarding this feature, can you help me find an answer to:

• How can I, as a power bi administrator, see who has published to web
• How can I see all the "publish to web" links the users have created so far ?
• If I disable the "publish to web" functionality in the Admin portal, will that prevent an already created link to be viewed in the web?

many thanks for your clarifications in advance,

Best Regards

Refresh failed

So last week when I first set up my gateway, the refresh worked (and there were places where it prompts me to enter credentials under data source credentials, now it is empty shown in screenshot).  Then then it fails and fails over and over again.  The second screenshot shows the error msg for failed refreshing.  Not sure what I did wrong here. Thank you.

Power BI IP remote access for Postgre/MySQL

$

To accept remote connections, Postgre/MySQL needs to add the IP of the connection's source server to allow remote access. Otherwise you would have to allow all accesses and this would compromise the security of the database. How can I know the Power BI connection source IP to add to a whitelist of access?

Eu li o conteúdo deste link, mas eu não encontrei específicamente essa informação:

How to connect power bi to google big query using direct query

$

I have most of my big tables (tables with over 200 M records) sitting at Google's Big Query servers and would like to use Power Bi (Desktop) for doing analytics. Found Simba´s ODBC driver, installed and configured and gained access to the datasets, but Power Bi is not giving a choice for Direct Querying the data. Instead, is trying to download it, which of course will not do it, firstly because of storage limitations on the client side, but mostly because the only reason I have the data at Big Query is to be able to use Google´s processing power. Simba´s driver specs says it should allow Direct Querying (called Direct BI) but that did not work for me.
Has anyone out there ever tried to connect BQ from Power Bi? If so could direct querying? Have any ideas or suggestion for doing this without transferring the data?

Thank you

How To Standardize Reports with Power BI Themes and Templates

$

Data is a crucial asset that businesses of every size must leverage in today’s competitive market. The data itself is simply a raw material; intelligent business leaders know that in order to unlock the value within their data set, it must be effectively ordered and analyzed.  That’s where Power BI themes and templates come in.

Power BI is a powerhouse product that allows you to explore and truly understand your data. It’s not just an analytical tool, but displays your results in a clear and compelling manner.

Data analysis often provides clear insights.  This is exactly why there is such an incredible industry focus on creating stunning visualizations. And by using Power BI themes and templates, you can easily take your data analysis to a higher level.

Using Themes to Standardize Your Reports

Vincent Van Gogh said “Color in a painting is like enthusiasm in life”.

As a manager or leader, you live and breathe the excitement that comes with your business. The visual elements of Power BI help you to powerfully convey key insights into your data to others.

MSBI Course has the ability to utilize design “themes” which are a JSON defined color palette (JSON is a minimal and readable format for storing data files) to help you standardize the look and feel of your reports. You can appeal to the aesthetics of a client, showcase your company’s style guidelines, or use different hues for seasonal reports. When you apply a Report Theme, all visuals in your report use the colors from your theme. Report themes are now available in Power BI Desktop and are also carried with your report whenever you publish it.

Depending on the version of Power BI Desktop, themes may still be in preview mode. To enable themes in preview mode, check the box for “Custom Report Themes” in the Preview Features section of the Settings and then restart your Power BI Desktop.  You can see examples of report themes in the Power BI Themes Gallery, which also has samples available for download.

How to Share Your Power BI Themes

You will want to establish your report themes in the early stages of a project, ensure they are accessible in a shared location, and abide by your company’s style guides to assist future report authors.

The simplest way to share this information is to use a OneDrive location, like the one linked to a Power BI Service workspace.  Learn more about Power BI File Management with OneDrive.

Go one step further by creating a Power BI Template

Another useful way to standardize your Power BI reports is to utilize a template. Templates indicate which data will be drawn into the report, along with the color scheme coming from the theme. You can create a template using an existing report and later instantiate it as a full report. To create a Power BI Template; go to File, Export, then Power BI Template. Then name your template and choose the desired location.

Your new template will include the report definition, the data model, as well as the and queries. After you’re finished, the template will include everything in the original Power BI report except the data itself, which can then and can be utilized by a future author, saving your team time and reducing the risk of errors.

Change Data Source but Keep Models and Visualizations

Hello,

I am using DirectQuery to get data from a data warehouse that we built that we are constantly making updates to. We currently have a single data warehouse that we are connected to, made models off of, and created visualizations for in Power BI.

However, we have multiple data warehouses (with the same data) where we test in some and make changes and then copy it over to another (for example: a production data warehouse, a testing data warehouse, a quality data warehouse, etc.)

My question is, because it is the same data and tables (generally just added tables or fields are the only changes), is it possible to change the data source in Power BI but keep the same data models and visualizations that we created for the original data warehouse source that we used? Or is it not possible because it is a completely different data source?

Currently when I try I get an error that you cannot use more than one source for DirectQuery, I am wondering if there is a workaround for this.

Thanks!

CJ

Wonderware Historian Database

$

Hi all

I am new to PBI and doing some tests to connect to a Wonderware Historian Database.

So far the direct Query works for some test tags!

If I need to pull in +/- 10000 Tags with a per second history (60*60*24 = 86400 data points /Tag/Day) this would be 315 Billion data point per Year for 10K tags.

Is the direct Query the best way and how do I refresh (update) the history to the current time?

The second question is with the PowerBI Gateway I connect this to PBI Cloud. how is the bandwidth affected with large data?

Has anyone done Wonderware Historian or process Historian integration like OSIsoft PI or Wonderware eDNA?

Thank you

Is there a way to pin an SSRS report using Power BI Report Server

I know that you can pin a SSRS report to a Power BI Dashboard.  I am using Power BI Report Server and was wondering if there is any way to embed and SSRS report from within a Power BI Report?

I have a feeling I know the answer, but I wanted to ask in case I was missing something.

BI to MySQL: Connection not working

Hi,

I have been through the other forum posts to find a solution to my issue, however, none of them has worked!

When I try to "Get Data > MySQL > connect", I receive :The Error Pop-upThe Error Pop-up

I tried all the solutions I could find in the forum (installing the 64-Bit ODBC connector, as well as the Connector/Net one), and have restarted to see if there were any registry updates or other restart required issues.

> Computer: Windows 7 (SP1), 64-Bit

> MySQL - database and server all on the same PC, same harddrive etc.

I can't seem to get it to connect at all!

Any other suggestions: I would be very willing to try!

Kind regards

Neil
