Data Gateway - determining what data is being pulled back

I'll start by saying this is probably pretty similar to posts that already exist, but my search skills are failing me.  

I have a Dataset that uses SQL, anonymous web, and an excel file. 

 

I have setup the On-Prem Data Gateway, and from the PowerBI > Manage Gateways page, everything is reporting as online and "Good to Go".

I have three datasources setup in the Gateway.

  1. an anonymous Web request (timeanddate.com)
  2. SQL Server to the database in question
  3. "Folder" to the root folder of local directory of the excel file's storage location (using my windows username and passwords for the login)

In my PBIX file I have these three sources setup

  1. an anonymous Web HTML page
  2. a SQL server connection in 'import connectivity mode'
  3. an Excel file with the full path to the desired excel file

 

I have run several refreshes after publishing this setup to the Power Bi Service.  My gateway connection is still showing as using the 'data gateway' and refresh history shows that all of them have completed.

 

I've watched 'open files' on the server hosting the excel file and I can see it get accessed by my user account when I do an on-demand refresh.

 

However, there are no updates to my 'online' dataset'

 

I've tried looking at the Data Gateway logs, but I can't make real heads or tails out of what's being recorded there. 

 

In short, everything 'seems' to be working properly, but data is missing in my charts.  I know that it is because I put some dummy data in the excel file and those results have yet to show in the graphs or in "Explore >See data"

Additionally the widget that utilizes the anonymous web request has yet to update either. 


I'd appreciate any pointers on what I'm doing wrong.

Intermittent Issue refreshing SQL data - error occurred during the pre-login handshake

I have been refreshing data from our 2 SQL servers for months.  Recently, refreshes started to fail.  However, sometimes they still work after trying a few times.  It seems strange to me that it is happening on 2 different SQL servers.  I do not have SSL or any extra protection on the SQL servers that I am aware off I updated the on-prem gateway.  I have rebooted gateway server, sql servers. Here is the error -

Power BI embedded Azure data lake connection

Hi,

 

I'm buildind a Power BI Embedded with a Azure data lake file as data source.

I built it in PBI Desktop and uploaded to workspace and showed OK to an application.

Now I need to refresh the data but I don't know how to setup an credential to Azure Data Lake.

Could you provide an connection string example?

"Get Data" on Service vs Desktop

I am having a hard time understanding why there are more data sources in the Service rather than the BI Desktop.

 

Even when the data source is available on both service and desktop, like Zendesk, I get completely different datasets on desktop than I do on Service.

 

How can one begin data modeling if some of major data sources are only available on the Service?

 

Here is my current work flow:

 

-Open BI Service: Get Data for Zendesk and Office 365 Adoption.

-Open a the Zendesk and Office 365 Datasets, then "Analyze in Excel" which allows me to download an excel file.

-Open Desktop: Get Data from Excel file

-At this point I can now build the data model that relates the office 365 user to the zendesk user.

-From Desktop, Publish to Service so that I can share with my boss.

Power BI with Sharepoint issues

Hello,

I need to get some Sharepoint Lists data to Power BI.

 

So far I'm having the following issues, using the latest version of Power BI for Desktop.

 

Using the Sharepoint List DataSource, when the sharepoint list is empty it returns one table without any columns and any schema.

 

Using OData to connect to sharepoint ListaData.svc, I receive the table columns when the list is empty but some columns are not returned at all, for exemple columns with more complex data types (that translate to List and Record types using the Sharepoint List DataSource).

 

Is there any workaround or a way to get the correct sharepoint data?

Power BI with Sharepoint issues

Hello,

I need to get some list data from Sharepoint online for a report.

 

So far I'm having the following issues:

 

Using the sharepoint online list datasource, when the list is empty I receive an empty table from the datasource, without any columns or any metadata information.

 

Using OData with sharepoint Listdata.svc, I receive column metadata when the list is empty, but some columns with more complex data types I don't receive at all (for example, columns that translate to List or Record types while using Sharepoint List Data Source).

 

Is there any work around or a way to get the correct sharepoint data?

Integrating power bi with NAV 2017 ?

I am trying to integrate power bi with NAV 2017. In nav 2017 we have option to show power bi report on home page of NAV. I am following this link:

After all the steps when I click on Authorize azure services12.jpg

 

 

 

It asks for some permission, After clicking Accept ,It shows a blank  white screen and then it automatically vanishes off.

I don't know what the problem is, any idea?

The issue is the fact that my file is not in a "TABLE" format.
Thr file is a database that is updated via an Appsheet mobile app.
If I try to change the format of the sheet into the correct one, I will be able to connect the file, but when some users add a record to the database, via the app, the refresh always failed. Also, checking and opening the file I received a message that the file is like corrupted.
Bottomline: the target is to obtain an "always" updated report in Power Bi, linked to an xls file/database of a mobile app developed in appsheet platform and stored in onedrive. The app is in the hand of different users that are able to use the mobile app to add some information in the database and some power users has to be able to analyze in real time (hourly update is enough) the results.
How I can connect without having problems Power Bi Online in that way?
With Power BI desktop,it's possbile and I was able to udpate, but I want to share this online..

Refresh not completing after loading all rows

Hi all,

 

We are loading data from a local SQL server. The load completes and it seems that all the rows in the table have been loaded. There is only one table in the load. The progress screen is not going away. I left it overnight and it was still stuck at the same screen in the morning. Attached image shows where it is stuck. The dots circle is still spinning which should mean that it is doing something.

I have disabled time intelligence, ralationships etc from the load setting, saved and reloaded but the problem persists. 

 

Any help is much appreciated.

Import multiple MS Office Data Connection files from PowerPivot to ONE PowerBI Model

Hey guys,

 

i have the following situation that I'm trying to deal with:

 

Each month I get around 1.3 million rows of data. I'm splitting it into two MS Excel tabs in one worksheet (so e.g. July1 and July2).

 

In the next step I am combining those two tabs via PowerPiovt (Union All...). When I import one month into my PowerBI datamodel it works just fine. But somehow I can't import more than one MS Office Data Connection into the same PowerBI Datamodel. I can only REPLACE on month by another...

 

I know my approach is not the most efficient (downloading, spliiting, combining, uploading...) but so far it's the only one that worked haha.

 

Can you help me out here? Do I have to put every month into one PowerPivot Connection? Or can i import multiple into the same PowerBI Model with a query or something?

Power BI gateway administration

Hi,

I am about to set up a gateway and wonder, if I should create a dedicated O365 user with Power BI pro license for the gateway setup and data sources.

We got a department working with PowerBI and the staff there has a high turnover. So I want to avoid loosing any administrative power over the gateway setup and data sources specified by setting up the gateway with a Power BI Pro licensed user which then leaves and the license is withdrawn.

Any experience or thoughts on this? I would like to save a Power BI pro license, but loosing the on-premise datasource because an employee leaves would be worse.

Salesforce import error

Hi all,
 
Does anyone know what I can do when I get this error while importing SFDC reports?
It has worked before.
 

I guess there is an issue within one of the newer reports that I have not previously connected, although I am only guessing.

On-premies data gateway (personal mode). Windows Server 2016. Error generating an asymmetric key.

I have try install On-premies data gateway (personal mode) on Windows Server 2016

on different way but without success.

- run as Admin

- install in simple path

- run installation from Root dir of disks

- clean register by other softs ater uninstall

 

What is the way to solve ?

usage metrics raw data

While exporting data from PowerBI Usage Metrics report to Excel what I get is a pivot table. I would like to know how can I get the raw data out of that, I need only the tables.

How to retrieve ALL expected data rows in API GET desktop query

I'm new to running queries with API calls in Power BI so please forgive any naivity or obvious errors included in this code.  I've pasted my code below to try and paginate through results, but I'm still only getting a table with 500 rows of data.  When I run the GET query in ARC, the metadata shows resultsAvailable = 16,650......this figure will grow as we get more customers, so I want this query to be dynamic in pulling in any new customers to my Customers Table in Power BI.  

 

The columns (variables) I'm trying to get into a data table are "contactID", "companyName", "firstName", "lastName".  Below is my attempt at returning all resuts.  The first contactID in the results should be  a value of 200, so I attempted to make that the starting point, but I'm sure I messed up the syntax to make that work correctly.  Any help would be much appreciated!!

 

PS ---> i hid the Token for security purposes, but let me know if that's necessary for testing code modifications and I can provide.

Does Auto Refresh from Excel on Sharepoint still work if using Get Data -> Web??

Hi all,

 

I have an xls file on SharePoint teamsite as I want to leaverage the Auto Refresh feature.

However, I would like to know if Auto Refresh still works if I connect to the xls using the method of Get Data -> Web instead of Get Data -> SharePoint Folder????
